Pannal Home Match Report

Scorecard

On another generally sunny day - though with the threat of rain present early on, Pannal won the toss and we were inserted - so a good toss to lose.

We opened with Steve Lawrence and, in an attempt to maintain wickets in hand for a later push, we opted to open with Steve Ellison - with Stevie E given instructions not to give it away and not worry so much about the runs. This he did with aplomb for 22 overs - and was therefore given instructions to launch a whirlwind of pain on the Pannal bowlers, or to die tryin'. Sadly neither whirlwind nor death came briskly enough - the only criticism that could be made in what was otherwise a superb job done by Steve.

Steve Lawrence fell to a cracking one handed return catch by Andy Ellis for 60 (84-1) , thus bringing Robbie Andonovski to the crease. Steve Ellison then departed for a hugely encouraging 27, but it seemed that 30 overs of pad rash got to Robbie and he was deceived by a good slower ball from Pannal's aussie and was bowled for 11 (104-3)

This brought the skipper and Tom Scott-Smith together, who duly set about slogging with gay abandon in an attempt to raise our score towards par (which was probably around 180). This was more successful for TSS than for the skipper (9) who departed to the last ball of Jon Smith's spell to an ungainly hoick. TSS managed some lusty blows in his 22 before wickets fell in a heap towards the end of our innings, with no batsmen really able to get into a hitting groove - save for Callum McIntosh's cut shot in the last over which rocketed off to the point boundary, and Chronic's inimitable flat bat cut over mid on for a one bounce 4. I think you had to be there to really appreciate that one.

So that last over lifted us to 151-7 off our allocated 45 overs - a score that in my experience has been a winning score more often than a losing one at Dacre. However Pannal clearly had a strong batting line up, and early wickets were key. Pannal made steady progress until the 9th over when Steve Ellison (6-0-17-1) removed Rob Ellis (caught behind) for 19 (36-1).

After encouraging performances in the nets in pre-season, the skipper saw fit to bring himself on for some of his military medium outswingers. However, the skipper had failed to realise that after football on Thursday he was unable to lift his leg from the floor, and proceeded to serve up perhaps the worst bowling the 1st division has ever seen. Somehow, this seemed to utterly flummox the Pannal batsmen - with Andy Ellis edging behind, only to see the keeper stood too far back to receive the regulation nick and Travis Baker skying a rank long hop to mid-wicket - only to see TSS's blue walking trainers grip the turf rather too well causing Tom to do an imitation of Coco the Clown rather than catching the dolly that was offered to him. Of course the skipper is sanguine about such matters and will in no way be taking any form of revenge on the culprits ;)

By the time Steve Lawrence (10-1-54-2) removed Travis Baker (27) with the score on 114-2, it was looking a little late for us - especially when Andy Ellis launched an assault on Steve Lawrence's bowling. However, Steve gained his revenge when Andy went for one shot too many, and was brilliantly caught just inside the boundary's edge by Steve Ellison for a match winning 72 (133-3). Robbie Andonovski then found his range and took 2 wickets in 2 balls with quick straight balls. However, with the score on 150, it was perhaps a little late for Dacre and the hattrick ball was fired down the leg side and disappeared for 4 byes to end the game with a 5 wicket defeat.

So the verdict? Well a point's a point - and there were plenty of positives again against the side who are probably favourites for the title. Steve Ellison bowled, fielded and batted well, Steve Lawrence looked like he was starting to find form - and despite the sabotage of the skipper's figures the fielding performance was in general much improved from last week. However, we need to find ways to make early inroads to the opposition's batting lineup.

Team for Pannal at Home

Same team as last week, apart from Tom Scott-Smith in for Greg Crossley. Could you ensure you are on the pitch changed for 1:30pm. If you feel like a net beforehand, I'll be down there for about 12:30-12:45.

Could everyone bring their subs money (£45 this season). If you haven't paid we'll be charging £10 match fees instead of the usual £7 to ensure fairness to those who have paid. Do the right thing y'all.

The team for Saturday is:

Rob Andonovski
Chris Cowell
Nick Crispin
Chris Eckford
Steve Ellison
Steve Lawrence
Callum McIntosh
Andy Merrill
Leon Peachey
Tom Scott-Smith

Hampsthwaite Away Match Report

On a sunny April day, Hampsthwaite's ground looked in fantastic condition. However, the idiot Dacre captain, having won the toss chose to have a bowl.

Initially, this looked a decent decision, as Robbie Andonovski seemed able to beat the bat at will and the inevitable nick was snaffled by Chris Eckford behind the stumps. 20-1. However, with a lightning quick outfield, anything that beat the infield raced away to the boundary, meaning that it was difficult to keep a lid on the run rate. A couple of missed chances and some sloppy fielding – combined with some good strokeplay from Hampsthwaite batsmen ensured that they reached 132 before Steve Lawrence (1-48) made partial amends for his earlier drop by taking a one handed blinder at midwicket to give Callum McIntosh (1-35) a deserved first wicket in the first division.

The game seemed to swing back into the balance with some excellent bowling from Steve Ellison (2-55) and Robbie Andonovski – with 3 wickets falling for 9 runs to reduce Hampsthwaite to 170-5, including Matt Boyle for a well made 81. However, a good knock from Paul Taylor and some lower order slogging combined with yet more dropped catches, lax outfielding and moderate captaincy decisions lifted Hampsthwaite to 257-7 on a wicket where 200 was probably par.

The key to chasing such a target is to keep wickets in hand – however the loss of Steve Lawrence and Greg Crossley by the time the scoreboard had reached only 12 made this a difficult proposition. A typically turgid 12 from the skipper, a flowing 18 from Chronic, an encouraging 9 from the newly returned Leon Peachey and a brave 16 from the injured Andy Merrill (who was so injured he looked slow even in comparision to his usual running) at least slowed the rate of decline, but with so many starts it was disappointing that no one went on to provide the serene Robbie Andonovski (90*) with the support required to mount an assault on the target. However, with the support of Chris Eckford, the batting point was comfortably secured as we closed on 183-7.

So despite the disappointing loss – there were plenty of positives to take from our first outing of the season. Chris Eckford performed very competently behind the stumps (despite not gloving a single ball in the warm-up!), Steve Ellison responded well to the responsibility of opening the bowling with a mature performance, whilst Callum McIntosh showed massive potential on debut and was unlucky to take only one wicket.

But inevitably, with 90* out 3-53 off 12 – the star of the day had to be Robbie Andonovski, who settled into the team with ease and performed admirably.

There will also be a grass net tonight at Dacre where Robbie and Anne Andonovski (our Australian guests) will be joining us, and generally making us look bad ;)

I'll be down there for about 5:45-6pm, so please make every effort to attend.

Update: Friday 17th, 10:42

I'm pleased to announce that +1 has now been confirmed. And what a confirmation. Dacre Banks is pleased, nay PROUD to announce the return of the man, the myth, the LEGEND - Leon Peachey. That's right!

Game On!

As it stands we're over 14 players for Monday's game - so we're game on for a 12 noon start on Easter Monday (tomorrow).

I've also added this season's Evening League fixtures to the calendar on the right - the first game is Knaresborough Forest away on 6th May.

Gearing up for the season

The season fast approaches, so this is just a quick note to detail what we have going on before 18th April comes charging round the corner.

I'm trying to organise an inter-club match for Easter Monday (13th April), weather permitting. If people could get in touch with either me or Tim Carrington to let me know your availability it would be appreciated. Hopefully the weather forecast should be accurate enough by Saturday to see if this is going to be viable - so if you could let your skipper know by then we can get things organised. Assuming it goes ahead it will be a 12 noon start, and take the format of a 20/20 game (or two if people are still up for it). Either way we should be done and dusted by about 4pm, enabling people to have a good session in the pub/spend quality time with their better halves etc for the rest of the day.

I think it's important that we have all had a go on a grass wicket before the season starts to ensure that we are as prepared as we can be when we turn up to do it for real on 18th April - so please make every effort to make yourself available.

Our overseas for this season Robbie Andonovski and his new bride Anne will be arriving on Thursday 16th. Robbie's joining us from Balgownie Cricket Club, who play in the Illawara grade competition in NSW. We'll be having a grass net (again weather permitting) and giving everyone a chance to meet Robbie and Anne. They'll be staying in the village this year so I'm sure you'll all do your best to make them welcome and at home. Nets will start as soon as people can get there from work - I'll try to get up there for 5:30/6:00. If you'd like the lovely Sue and Helen to do some catering, please let us know. Otherwise I'm sure we'll manage to subsist on liquid nourishment ;)

That's all for now - so I look forward to hearing from everyone post haste!
